What is Philosophical Friends?

Alison extends her philosophical thinking approach to life through setting up and volunteering her free time for a local community group ‘Philosophical Friends’. This group meeting on the second Wednesday of the month 10.30 – 12.00 at the Gosport Museum and Art Gallery, brings together people of all ages and walks of life to share ideas and ponder life’s big questions in a friendly, supportive atmosphere.

What is Philosophical Thinking in the Community?

Philosophical thinking is a practical approach to thinking, questioning, and talking together about important issues in life which we all have in common. It’s open to all ages, and experiences of children and people. There’s no need to know anything about academic philosophy to join in and think in a philosophical way.

Philosophy is all around us in everyday life, we just don’t usually stop and think about it deeply until someone asks us!

Philosophical thinking together is a way to bring about good community (social) interaction for all through shared understandings. It helps us to explore ideas, beliefs and values using a critical and creative thinking method to gain clarity of and refinement of our thoughts within a caring and collaborative community of willing people.

In turn this approach can lead to better thinking, better relationships and better understanding of our being, that of others around us and daily living in general.

How Does it Work?

To begin with, using a picture, story or film clip as prompt, the group will be invited by me as the facilitator, to ask questions, and engage in a more structured than usual conversation, to explore and make sense of big ideas or themes.

Such ideas as the great philosophers, like Socrates have questioned since the beginning of time, for example, how do we know what to believe? Can a society ever be fair? Is it ever ok to tell a lie? Is it better to give or receive? Can dreams come true? Do we expect too much of our friends? Can we ever reach a state of complete happiness? Should we ever give up hope? Whose responsibility is the environment?

What Clients Say

It is important to stop for a moment to think about the simplest things in life, like the meaning of the word ‘love’.

A great way to take on board new ideas and fresh perspectives on life.
